It is normal custom to give a token of sympathy to empathize with the grieving family of the deceased. Consider giving flowers or funeral prayer cards to show support of the ones left behind.

Religious families will appreciate that you have prayed for their lost loved one. It is a spiritual offering that is generally acceptable. If you want to give something else, consider sending a potted shrub as a token of remembrance. This shrub can be kept in the pot or planted into the ground to represent a long lasting memorial to the deceased.

You can also have your words of sympathy etched onto a slab of stone. This is an unconventional offering but a nice one. It can be placed at the gravesite or in the family's garden as a life-long memorial for their loved one. Make sure that your quotation is a pleasant one that brings to mind happy memories of deceased.
