If you learn that a friend's loved one has passed away, you might want to offer some help to ease the family's pain. It is normal custom to give a token of sympathy to empathize with the grieving family of the deceased. Consider giving flowers or funeral prayer cards to show support of the ones left behind.

Religious families will appreciate that you have prayed for their lost loved one. It is a spiritual offering that is generally acceptable. If you want to give something else, consider sending a potted shrub as a token of remembrance. This shrub can be kept in the pot or planted into the ground to represent a long lasting memorial to the deceased.

Another great idea is to offer a slab of stone with a nice quote engraved in it. Instead of offering a card, this unique piece of decor can be installed in a garden. It can also be placed indoors in a special place of the house. Have something memorable etched into the piece that will bring back good memories of the dead.

If you have photographs of the deceased that the family members do not have copies of, consider compiling them into an album. The recipients will appreciate this gift, especially if they have never seen the pictures before. You bring food for the grieving family. This is a common offering and you can also pitch in if they are holding a reception after the funeral. It might be a good idea to offer non-perishable items for the guests. Food that will not spoil easily can be served throughout the entire wake.

It is a nice gesture to give prayer cards during the wake or after the burial. You can offer a card with a bouquet of flowers. Present it in a pretty leatherette folder or in a picture frame with a stand.
