Mortuary makeup artists offer a unique gift to those mourning the loss of a loved one. It takes top skills and excellent training to perform well in this field. Making a person look the way they did in life is very important to family and friends of the deceased. We have all heard people comment about how "peaceful and good" a person looked at their funeral or wake. This is the work of those who excel in their work.

It is remarkable that a person can be made to look "life like" even in death. It is even more so that they can be made to look the way they did before their death, by someone who never knew them. Most often families will submit a favorite photo to the funeral home and the "beautician" will use this as a template of sorts in order to recreate the person's looks.

The custom in many places is for loved ones to have a viewing of the deceased before they are laid to rest. Often people will have difficulty believing the person has died if they do not see it for themselves. Makeup for the living is not appropriate for the deceased. Most is made to work chemically with the warmth of the skin. This will not blend on a person who is post mortem. Instead it will cake up and sit unattractively. Those who work with morticians use a special non-thermogenic blend.
