Visiting the final resting place of a loved one is an important part of the healing process for many people, and a means of respect for others. Though it is not uncommon for folks to simply lay flowers across the grave, most facilities advise against it. There are several reasons why it is recommended that one use cemetery vases instead.
Aside from the fact that most burial facilities now set and enforce strict guidelines as to what type of floral containers may be used, there are other practical reasons for this practice. To begin with, the blooms will last longer when they are kept in a vase of water. A sturdy holder will also keep them looking fresh and tidy and prevent them from being blown away.
Grounds maintenance is another consideration that has led most facilities to make container stipulations. Certain styles make it much easier for those tending the lawn to keep the grass around each headstone neat and trimmed. Some degree of uniformity also lends an aesthetic appeal to the site when viewed as a whole.
These products come in a vast array of designs, styles, shapes, colors and sizes. When making a selection, one should always consider what the deceased's preferences would have been. The main thing to be concerned with is that the container is of practical design and in a material that is capable of withstanding being exposed to the elements for prolonged periods of time.
Shape is a matter of personal preference, though most people try to select something that matches the headstone's style. This part of the design will have no effect on how long the product will last. Containers may be of cylindrical, conical, squared, urn or custom made form.
Placement availability is also a necessary consideration. Whenever possible, place the container on the side of, or above the headstone instead of in front of it, to avoid blocking resident information. No purchase should be made without checking facility rules first.
